What is the Lisfranc Joint

July 09 2025

The Lisfranc joint is located in the mid foot and is responsible for holding up our arch.

It is named after Jacques Lisfranc, a surgeon in the Napoleonic Army, who described it in soldiers whose feet were caught in the stirrups.

Although research suggests the incidence is 1 in 50000, it is seen far more commonly than that, as we become better at recognising the injury. Simonne alone has seen 12, sometimes 2 in the same person, so it is far more common than we used to think.

It is a significant injury that often requires surgery, or an extended period of non-weightbearing and rehab. Even if managed perfectly, an athlete will often need orthotics following the injury to help support the arch, and may lose their top end speed.

So as you sit back to enjoy Game 3, you can now do it knowing why Kalyn is not on the field, and know Liz has nothing to do with it!

And if you suspect you may have this injury, Simonne is an expert in the field, so call us today to make an appointment.
