The importance of strength training.

It is well known that exercise of any form has many positive impacts on the body and health, however, a study done by Bloch-Ibenfeldt M et al, set out to determine what exactly this looks like.

This study looked at 451 healthy older adults near retirement age who did either heavy resistance training, moderate training or no training for one year.

The results showed that only those who did heavy resistance training maintained their leg strength and that lean muscle mass was better preserved in the heavy training group.

In addition, it showed that doing strength training for just one year can have lasting benefits on muscle function, even after stopping the training and can therefore, help older adults stay string and independent for longer.
