A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine indicates that children
and adolescents who spend more time being sedentary may have slightly higher
chances of experiencing spinal pain.
However, data in this meta-analysis by Montgomery LRC, Swain M, Dario AB, et al
does not confirm a cause-and-effect relationship, suggesting that sedentary
behaviour does not necessarily lead to an increased risk of developing spinal pain.
This does not mean that children and adolescents should be sedentary but rather
that there is usually another reason for spinal/back pain other than not participating
in exercise.
