Runners

Attention Runners!

With the weather warming up and running season beginning to hit full swing we thought it would be a good idea to talk about some injuries more common to the runner!

The first we will talk about is ‘Shin Pain’.Shin pain is characterised by pain in and around the distal - middle portions of the tibia and is usually associated with a sudden increase in the frequency, duration and / or intensity of activity.

Three major main types of shin pain include:

1 - MedialTibial Stress Syndrome: Overload of the soft tissue structures that attach to the shin

2 - Stress reactions / fractures: Overload of the tibial bone which can be caused by either direct vertical forces or excessive rotation on the shin bone.

3 - CompartmentSyndrome: The shin and calf contains a number of complex muscle compartments -with excessive load they can become inflamed and swollen.

Each of these types of shin pain require specific management and individual causes so if you have been suffering from some shin pain, pop on in and let us help point you in the right direction so you can keep on smashing that summer pavement!
