A study done by W Brinjikji et.al in 2015 showed that from a sample of 3110 people, 30% of people aged 20 years of age and 96% of people aged 80 years had a disc bulge on CT or MRI.
The interesting thing is that none of these people had symptoms!
It is now known that a high proportion of our population actually have degenerative features of their spine on imaging and most of these are a normal part of aging and don’t actually cause any symptoms or harm.
In addition, a study done in 2021 by t D T Lilly et al. showed that in people with symptomatic lumbar disc herniations, the majority of patients were able to be managed conservatively and didn’t require surgery.
