Concussion Series Part 6

Concussion Series Part 6

Can we prevent concussion?

Research has shown that headgear/helmets, mouthguards and neck strengthening exercises DO NOT reduce the incidence or severity of concussion, this is mostly due to the large velocity required to cause the shearing force within the brain.

In recent times individual sporting codes have made policy and rule changes (PRIMARY FACTORS) in an attempt to reduce concussion incidence, though evidence has shown that in sports like rugby these rule changes have had NO IMPACT on the incidence of concussion. On a positive note though, “removal policies” following concussion do help to prevent secondary injuries.

health professionals can aim to INCREASE EARLY DETECTION to help minimise symptoms and prevent subsequent concussion, and educate sideline personnel and medical teams regarding proper clinical management.
