A study done in 2000 by E A Verhagen et al suggests that using either tape or ankle braces can help in reducing the number of ankle sprains and can lead to less severe ankle sprains when they happen.
Interestingly, this study suggests that braces are generally more effective than tape in preventing sprains.
It is uncertain whether athletes with previous ankle sprains benefit more from taping or braces.
Proprioceptive training however, can lower the risk of ankle sprains in athletes with a history of sprains to the same level as those without prior injury
