With things such as marathons and long-distance running becoming very popular at the moment, it is important to know how to train correctly and prepare yourself for running to avoid overuse injuries.
A study by Schuster Brandt Frandsen J, Hulme A, Parner ET, et al looked at whether sudden increases in running distance either over a week in one session, increased the risk of overuse injuries.
Of the 5205 adult participants in the study, 35% reported suffering from overuse injuries.
This study showed that if a participant did a single run that exceeded their longest run within the last 30 days by 10% they were at a significantly increased risk of developing an overuse injury.
Takeaway message, if you want to reduce your risk of an overuse injury while running training, ensure each session you don’t increase your running distance by 10% or more!
