Is there a link between inadequate sleep and insulin resistance??
Sleep deprivation has reached global pandemic proportions in the last ten years, due to the stress of modern living, increasing work demands, rigorous academic programme, social obligations and of course the rise of doom scrolling on social media.
Short sleep is defined as less than 7 hours sleep in a 24 hour period.
A systematic review by Singh et al in 2022 found a significant association between short sleep duration and insulin resistance.
Adequate sleep is necessary for maintaining proper metabolic health to prevent long term complications such as Type 2 Diabetes
Sleep deprivation is a preventable risk factor to help decrease the incidence of metabolic complications
